Job Description

About the Company

We are a national professional services and technology organization with a rapidly growing presence across the United States with an office in North County, San Diego. Our platform brings together a high-touch tax services firm serving businesses nationwide and a technology-driven compliance and risk intelligence platform that helps organizations proactively monitor and manage tax exposure.

Together, we combine deep expertise with innovative technology to deliver smarter, more efficient solutions while creating opportunities for our team to grow, take ownership, and make a real impact.

The Role

We’re looking for a hands-on Controller! You’ll own the books, run the monthly close, and turn our numbers into clear reporting that leaders can act on.

You’ll work closely with the CEO and leadership team and manage one team member who handles payroll and accounts receivable. We’re building this function from the ground up and want someone who brings precision, curiosity, and a “let’s get the numbers right” attitude. You know the person who can’t leave an unreconciled account alone until it ties out to the penny? That’s who we’re looking for.

This role is on-site in our office five days a week, so you can work side by side with leadership and the teams you support.

This is a great next step for an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager or Senior Accountant who’s ready to own the finance function and lead a small team. You’ll coach and review others’ work while staying hands-on yourself, and as we grow, your team can grow with you.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, proactive and a clear communicator, with a talent for turning messy processes into reliable systems. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys a fast-growing environment, values clean books people can trust, and wants a seat at the table as the company scales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own accounting in QuickBooks Online, including reviewing journal entries, reconciliations and accounts payable.
  • Run the monthly close and produce accurate, on-time financial statements.
  • Deliver a monthly financial package and dashboards that help leadership understand how the business is performing.
  • Track cash flow and collections, and keep leadership informed about where we stand.
  • Build and maintain the annual budget and a simple rolling forecast in Excel, and track actuals against them.
  • Pull revenue, client and pipeline data from Salesforce and tie it to the financials for reporting and KPIs.
  • Manage, coach and review the work of one direct report responsible for accounting and accounts receivable.
  • Answer finance questions from Sales, Operations, Technology and HR, and support their decisions with data.
  • Tighten processes and controls in QuickBooks, Salesforce and Excel so our numbers get faster and more reliable.
  • Partner with our CPA on year-end, tax and compliance needs.
  • Serve as the go-to person for finance questions across the company.
  • Various ad hoc duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field required.
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience required, including time as an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant or similar.
  • Experience supervising, training or reviewing the work of at least one team member required.
  • Strong hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online required.
  • Proven experience with month-end close, reconciliations, financial statements, budgets, forecasts and cash flow projections required.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and internal controls required.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, building models) required.
  • Comfortable navigating Salesforce to find, pull and report on data (reports and exports, not administration) preferred.
  • Experience at a small or growing company preferred.
  • CPA preferred but not required.

Why Join Us

  • Full benefits package including health, dental, vision, and company matching 401(k).
  • Company-wide winter break – we shut down for a full week over Christmas. PTO + paid holidays.
  • Flextime scheduling.
  • Professional development support.
  • Growth opportunities in a fast-scaling company.
  • A role with local presence and national impact.
  • Be part of a culture built on integrity, transparency and relentless client focus.
